How do I measure a room for tiling? |

Measuring for floor tiles.
Use a tape measure and measure the room from one wall to the opposite wall (make a note of the distance). Now measure the distance of the opposing walls to each other and make a note of this. Now multiply the two measurements together. For example, if the length of the floor was 4 metres and the breadth was 3 metres that would give an area of 12 metres square.
If there is an additional room off the main room to be tiled then treat this as a separate area. For example, a larder off a kitchen, apply the measuring process above to that area then add that measurement to the kitchen area. When buying tiles always add an extra 10% to your overall measurements to allow for cuts and wastage.
Measuring for wall tiles.
Use a tape measure and measure the height distance from the floor to the ceiling. Then measure the length of the wall. Multiply the two measurements together. For example, if the height of the wall was 2.4 metres and the length was 2.8 metres that would give an area of 6.72 metres square.
If there is a window in the room measure the height and length, multiply these 2 measurements together then deduct that measurement from the overall area of the wall. For example if the window height is 0.5 metres and the length is 0.75 metres that would give an area of 0.37 metres square. Subtract this from the overall wall measurement (6.72 metres square) and you are now left with area minus the window space (6.35 metres square). Apply this process to all four walls and add the areas together. Always add 10% extra to the final measurement to account for cuts and wastage.
